Five mornings a week, Caroline and I get up and run. The alarm goes off, we brush our teeth, lace up our shoes and search for something to eat. Then off we go. At times we’ve struggled to find something that we can not only digest, but stomach at 5am. That is, until we invented Great Grain Adventure Bars.
For those of you that have been following us on our journey, you know that Caroline is an extremely talented, creative and hard-working baker. In 2016 she was recognized by none other than Bon Appetit for making a doughnut that they considered the Best Dessert of the Year. So when she told me she had an idea for a breakfast bar I got very, very excited.
Want to try for yourself? Here’s the recipe she used:
ADVENTURE BARS
3 cups Great Grains cereal
1/2 cups wheat germ
1 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Instruction: Melt the butter, brown sugar, honey, vanilla, salt and nutmeg together until the sugar is dissolved. Then pour that into the bowl of Great Grains cereal, wheat germ and cranberries. After that you mix it all together and then press into a lined 9×13 inch pan. Then set everything into the refrigerator so that it will set. After that, cut it into 9 Adventure Bars.
Prepare to fall in love. This will be the breakfast bar that will help you not only stick to your healthy new years resolutions, but enable you to create healthy eating patterns for life.
Oh, and do kids like them? Um, yes. We tested them out on the neighborhood and almost every single one came back for more.
