We crave tacos almost all the time. Luckily, Asheville, North Carolina has several great places to choose from to satisfy your taco craving. You could literally go to a different place every single day of the week. Each of the restaurants we picked have their own unique twist on tacos. Listed below, in alphabetical order, are what we think are The Best Tacos in Asheville.

Best Tacos in Asheville, NC

Grey Eagle Taqueria | 185 Clingman Avenue

The carnitas and carne asada here are soooo good. Just the thought of them makes my mouth water. The sides are tasty as well. We like the fermented cabbage slaw (curtido) and the chips and salsa. Stay for music while you’re at it! (The Grey Eagle Taqueria is located in the Grey Eagle Music Hall in the River Arts District). Oh and be on the lookout for three new Grey Eagle Taqueria locations. Two of the new sites are going to be at BearWaters Brewing Canton and Maggie Valley locations. The other will be at Big Pillow Brewing, the first craft brewing company in Hot Springs.

Mamacita’s | 77 Biltmore Avenue, Suite 100

The corn tortillas are awesome at Mamacita’s because they are fresh-ground and milled onsite. Add the flavors of the simmering sauce of the pork taco to the corn tortilla and tons of topping options and you’ve got a winner. Their Baja sauce is on point as well. Taco Tuesdays are 2 for $5 on most tacos. It’s a great spot to get a bite to eat before a show at the Orange Peel or a tour of the brewery at Wicked Weed. In addition to it’s a great location it consistently makes some of the best tacos in Asheville.

Papas and Beer | 1000 Brevard Road

Easy parking and big burritos. These are some of the best tacos in Asheville and they are perfectly situated near Bent Creek. Which means post-hike or mountain bike adventure, you can fill your belly with some tasty food and a cold beer to wash it all down. All of the tacos come on soft corn tortillas and are served with refried beans, rice, and pico de gallo.

Taco Billy | 201 Haywood Road

They make all kinds of tacos but this is where we go here for breakfast tacos. You can build your own or just go for the Billy Joel (bacon, egg, and jack cheese) or Billie Holiday (sausage, egg, and jack cheese). Heck, they’re all good. The plantain tortillas are unique and the Yardbird is a local favorite. Bonus: they have a couple of great murals at their location including their logo on the side of their building. We put it on our list of the Best Instagram Spots in Asheville.

Taco Temple | 132 Charlotte Street

The fish tacos here are great. The grilled ones and the fried ones. We also really like the black bean taco with queso fresco on it. They ground their own masa and make their own corn tortillas. Also, according to our friend Carol Pennell, you can’t ever go wrong with whatever they have on special.

Tacos Jalisco Mexican Restaurant | 1328 Patton Avenue

Fresh ingredients and tons of flavor make Tacos Jalisco one of the best places to get tacos in Asheville, NC. They use meat from local business Hickory Nut Gap and load up all of their tacos with big portions. Not into meat? No worries, they make an incredible shrimp taco.

Taqueria del Sol | 2606 Hendersonville Road

This taco truck should not be missed! It makes some of the best tacos in Asheville. Probably in our top 3. They don’t take credit cards so come hungry and bring your cash. Get the al pastor tacos. They are amazing!

Taqueria Muñoz | 1438 Patton Avenue

West Asheville is super lucky to have Taqueria Muñoz in the neighborhood. Why? Because they dish up some of the best tacos in Asheville, NC, that’s why! From 10am to 9pm, seven days a week, you can get delicious food at affordable prices. The tortillas are as fresh as any you’ll find in town and the meat options include the usuals such as chicken, carne asada, and al pastor pork but you can also get lengua (beef tongue) and cabeza (head). If you’re looking for a local place without a ton of tourists, this is your spot. Oh, and if you’re drinking beers at Zillacoah, look for their food truck! You’ll probably smell the delicious food before you see the truck!

White Duck Taco Shop | 388 Riverside Drive

There are 9 White Duck Taco locations but this is our favorite. There’s ample parking, a beer bus, indoor and outdoor seating, and best of all it’s right next to the French Broad River. This location is also pet friendly. As for the food … you can enjoy some unique tacos at White Duck. Their mushroom/potato with romesco is a favorite. So is their Korean beef bulgogi taco. In addition to these two, we also like trying whatever happens to pop up that week.

Update: Zia Taqueria is closed! | 521 Haywood Road

This was one of our favorite spots in West Asheville to go for tacos. The chips and salsa that they bring before your food comes are really good and the tacos themselves are finger-licking awesome. If you like spicy, go for the grilled fish taco which has jalapeno peppers on it. Pre-covid we liked to sit at their bar or on the patio. These days we’re digging how they’ve spaced out their picnic tables and created a nice area to eat outdoors. They’ve also got a super easy pick-up method. These are easily some of the best tacos in Asheville. If you’re undecided on where to go, this is always a solid pick.

Update: Taco Boy is now in this location. We’ll report back when we’ve had a chance to try the food.
